Individualized Care

How individual therapy can help

People begin therapy for many reasons. You may be managing persistent worry, intrusive thoughts, fear, sadness, challenging experiences or relationships, major life transitions, or a sense that your life no longer aligns with your values.

Your therapist will spend time understanding your history, current concerns, symptoms, strengths, and priorities. Together, you will establish a plan of care that incorporates the most effective evidence-based treatments, offering real results. Sessions are available in person at our two East Village offices and through telehealth as needed.

Treatment

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
  • Prolonged Exposure (PE)
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

The following adjunctive treatments may also be used when appropriate to support your care:

  • Mindfulness-Based Approaches
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What happens in the first individual therapy appointment?

Your therapist gathers background information, learns what you would like to change, and uses structured assessment tools to provide the most accurate diagnosis. Your therapist will provide information about the recommended treatment approach, including the most effective evidence-based treatments for your symptoms and presenting concerns. You will work together to set a schedule and a plan for treatment moving forward. Diagnosis may not be required if you are paying for services out of pocket.

Do you offer individual therapy in person or online?

Yes. Seva offers in-person appointments at two East Village locations in Des Moines and telehealth appointments for people located in Iowa when appropriate. Seva recommends in-person sessions whenever possible but will accommodate telehealth sessions as appropriate.

Do you accept my insurance?

Yes. Seva accepts most Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, and Aetna plans. Contact our office for an estimate of your benefits.

How is therapy at Seva different from traditional “talk therapy”?

Your Seva therapist will utilize evidence-based treatments. This means your therapist will place significant emphasis on assigning an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan to ensure the most effective interventions are used to treat your symptoms. They will work with you to establish objective measures of your symptom progress so you can see how treatment is working or establish alternative approaches if it is not working.

How is evidence-based treatment structured?

Your Seva therapist will balance data-driven, empirically supported treatments with a warm, compassionate, and meaningful therapeutic relationship. Sessions are flexible and open, allowing you space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Your therapist will listen attentively and provide real tools that have proven effectiveness for your symptoms and challenges.

What does it mean if my therapist is “provisionally licensed” or working under supervision?

Seva therapists who are provisionally licensed (t-LMHC or LMSW) are required by Iowa law to receive clinical supervision in preparation for independent licensure. This means your care will have additional oversight to help ensure you receive an accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and efficient outcomes. Provisionally licensed therapists also bill insurance under a clinical supervisor, so you may see the supervisor’s name on your insurance explanation of benefits (EOB). You may direct questions about your care to your therapist or your therapist’s supervisor.
